Ponnayya Pillai belongs to Tanjavoor Quartet's family. He learned music, dance and mridangam and accompanied his uncle Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai in dance concerts. He worked as a professor in Music College at Chidambaram and Madras. He composed Swarajatis, Varnams and Krutis. He was conferred with Sangeeta Kalanidhi in 1932.
